From the time she was little, Toby Dorr lived life by the book.

She was a good wife, a good mother, and lived in Kansas City with her husband,

the man she had been with since high school, as well as her two grown sons nearby.

It was a simple life that seemed pleasant enough, but beneath the surface, Toby felt invisible.

After being laid off from her job in 2001, Toby was forced to process her father's

terminal cancer battle as well as a cancer diagnosis of her own, all at the same time. In this most

difficult time of her life, she felt that her husband didn't provide the support and validation

that she needed. In 2004, Toby found joy and purpose when she founded

the Safe Harbor Prison Dog Program, a nonprofit that allowed prisoners to train and care

for rescue dogs and prepare them for adoption. During her time working at the Lansing

Correctional Facility, one inmate stuck out to her, a man named

John Maynard. Toby felt a spark during her sessions with John, and before long, the spark set off a fiery

love. It's often said that love makes people do crazy things, but for this love, Toby would break the law and help a prisoner escape.
