Courted controversy.

Yes, he has. So the people are upset with him, the religious leaders are upset with him.

Jesus just told them that they committed some sin that's not going to be forgiven them by calling him and his works of the devil.

Yes.

They have said that he is casting out demons by the power of the devil.

So they have attributed the good things he is doing to the power of evil.

And now Jesus is going to do something that some people might find offensive,

but is actually fairly comforting to you and me.
