Welcome to five minutes in church history hosted by Dr Stephen Nichols, where we take a little

break from the present to go exploring the past. Travel back in time as we look at the people,

events, and even the places that have shaped the story of Christianity.

In Oxford, England stands the Martyrs Memorial. Construction on this memorial began in

1841. It took two years and so it was completed in 1843.

It's a long tower in fact some think it looks like it was removed off of some

cathedral somewhere as a cathedral spire and put there in these intersections of these wonderful streets in this picturesque town of

Oxford University.

This martyrs memorial commemorates the deaths of the martyrs through the English Reformation.

At the top of it, there are three statues,

statue of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer,

a statue of Bishop Hugh Latimer,

and a statue of Bishop Nicholas Ridley.

All three of these men were Cambridge scholars, not Oxford scholars.

They were students and professors there at Cambridge.

And all three of these men were not only Cambridge

scholars, they were also made bishops.

And of course, Thomas Kramer was made Archbishop of Canterbury,

the first Archbishop over the Church of England.

So these men not only contributed to the scholarly basis as it were of the

reformation in England, they were also men who helped in the administration of the
