Summary

The Buzz Lightyear origin movie LIGHTYEAR (2022) has become a cultural lightning-rod in the right-wing moral panic over "grooming." We discuss this controversy (which is ridiculous, by the way), and then discuss the movie, in which we can learn a little bit about how the Disney Company views itself.

Hi everyone, Will here. We talked about this subject in greater length on our last Patreon episode,

0:06.1

and I'm not sure if a goofy podcast about the Buzz Lightyear movie is the ideal place for much more.

0:12.7

But the US Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn Roe v Wade is still the issue that's at

0:18.3

the forefront of so many people's minds, so I think we'd be remiss to not acknowledge it at the

0:23.2

start of this free episode. It's obviously a very scary and frustrating thing when such an

0:29.0

unpopular decision can be mandated by an institution as illegitimate as the Supreme Court,

0:35.3

and affects so many people's lives. It's doubly scary and frustrating when the

0:39.8

nominally liberal institutions that should be fighting back act so powerless. There's no silver

0:45.5

lining or good news here, but there is the knowledge that this decision does not represent the

0:50.4

wishes of the vast majority of people in the US and beyond, and the hope that maybe we can all

0:55.3

work together even as institutions fail us. To that end, we've included in the show notes,

1:00.5

some links where you can support abortion funds in the US. Please consider donating,

1:06.0

and now on a completely different note, on with this episode about, yes, the Buzz Lightyear movie.

1:25.5

Welcome to Michael and us. I'm Will Sloan, here is always with. Luke Savage, welcome back everyone.

1:35.0

This is, I suppose, in some ways a special episode in the tradition of our Rise of Skywalker episode.

1:42.5

Real heads will remember. This is a Michael and us at the movies episode. There is just feet for

1:47.6

me at this moment a bag of popcorn that we got and didn't finish while at the movie. I by contrast

1:53.6

had my entire bag of large popcorn and I feel very bad about it. I'm trying to be on the straight

1:59.2

narrow lately and trying to lose that last 10 pounds and I feel like I've just set myself completely

2:05.0

off course. But as this movie teaches us, there really is no courses there. The course is the one

2:10.4

that you take. That's right, everything happens for a reason. Anyway, I've been pressuring Will

2:15.2

to do an episode on the blockbuster Buzz Lightyear origin film Lightyear for a few weeks now.
