overbearing and overwhelming, particularly in today's world where technology has, basically, created and

forced virtually every citizen of every industrialized nation into a kind of sub-world in which we must also live.

Constantly bombarded with news and social medias, and the advertising that inevitably comes with both are enough to drive even the most

psychologically healthy individual to anxiety and negative self-reflections while waiting on those likes on your latest status post.

Long before living off the grid was even a term and long before social media, and on the hour, emotionally crippling news

notifications though, folks were choosing to live reclusive lives.

There are a seemingly endless number of reasons why individuals

choose to self-exile. Mental health often plays a role, whether negatively or

positively.

Anarchist Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, left his career as the University of California

Berkeley's youngest assistant mathematics professor in the institution's history in 1968 to live

primitive in a self-made cabin in the remote woods outside of Lincoln, Montana.

By all accounts, Kaczynski was immensely intelligent, and perhaps if he hadn't participated in

a study conducted by a Harvard psychologist as a sophomore

in college, his lawyers would later say, his reclusion from society, and his actions that followed might have never happened.

The study, simply put, was performed to study the participants' psychological reactions to verbal humiliation and

psychological abuse and is thought by many to have been directly connected to

the CIA's mind control program, MK Ultra.
