Summary

Folks, I've fielded a lot of questions about this rifle—so here's a 15-minute bonus rifle review for you. This is the build project I did last year to create my ultimate .280 Ackley Improved custom mountain rifle. It was built by my old friend Steve Pratt of Elk Meadow Performance, using the following components:

It turned out wonderfully... Weighs right around 7.5 pounds ready to go up the moutain!

Friends, if you were to build your ultimate mountain rifle, your ultimate precision hunting rifle, what would you build?

0:08.0

So I've been asked this question a lot of times through my years in the industry and in front of me I have a rifle

0:17.0

that fits that pretty well and I've been asked a lot of times in the past few

0:22.2

months to tell more about this specific

0:25.0

rifle. This is one that I had done last year. I did some of it and I had friends do some of it.

0:31.2

At any rate, it's a rifle that was assembled of a

0:34.7

certain family of components and built a certain way in a certain cartridge

0:40.5

exactly how I wanted it. So I thought I'd share it with you. So something I've always liked to say

0:47.5

about rifles is, well let me back up. There's the old saying, lock, stock, and barrel.

0:53.6

And on a traditional muzzle-loading rifle

0:56.8

where that saying originated, that talks about the lock,

0:59.6

right, whether it's a flintlock or percussion lock,

1:02.2

the rifle stock, and then the barrel. Those are the primary components

1:06.5

of a rifle. In a more modern sense, I like to say that the action is the heart of a rifle. The stock is its skeleton because that's

1:16.5

what supports the whole system right, but its soul lives in the barrel. You have to have a really good barrel to have a really good rifle.

1:25.7

So let's talk about this one. This is built on a defiance anti X action. Now the anti

1:32.0

action is one that has been skeletonized really dramatically so that it's

1:38.9

super duper light. You can see all the different cutouts in the action itself. You can see them in the

1:45.8

fluting in that bolt. The bolt handle is hollowed out. The bolt shroud is scallowed out,

1:53.0

the shroud is scalloped.

1:54.0

What you can't see is inside this rifle,

1:57.0

it's got the same treatment.
