My name is Richard Ames. The politics of climate change can seem pretty bleak.

In order to save the planet, everyone in the global north must seemingly become a little poorer.

But that's no longer quite where we're at, if we ever were.

Instead of opposing everyone in the global south

to the global north.

The politics of climate change increasingly pits workers the world over

against the owners of capital.

And that's not the dogmatic assertion of someone who would believe it to be the case no matter what.

But the conclusion of a careful piece of analysis by one of the most wide-ranging thinkers writing today,

R.J. Singh Chaudry.

R.J. is the executive director of the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research and the author of The Exhausted of the Earth, politics in a burning world.

We sat down to talk about exhaustion, status and emergency, how the right got real on climate, and how the left mine too.

Richard, thank you for having me.

So about an hour before this interview began, in the spirit of bringing us up to the present moment, I got an email from James

Hansen, the climate scientist, and he's writing now and has been writing for the last

few years about a quite pronounced acceleration in the degree of warming that there is in the Earth

atmosphere. And he was writing there about aerosols and about the way in which in 2020,

this is quite a famous story at this point, the Maritime Agency,
