Welcome back to another episode of five minutes in church history. This is our second day and our second installment of our episodes on the life and legacy and thought of Martin Luther. Yesterday we were on location in Ice Laben here in

Germany and we are once again in this town of Ice Laben. Now Luther's

parents came to this town from the town of Mora and there in Mora

Hans' father owned a farm and when Hans father died the farm passed to Hans' older brother.

So Hans had a choice.

He could either stay on the family farm and work for his older brother,

or he could strike out on his own.

The Luther family owned something in the neighborhood of six different farms in that region.

Later in his life, Luther would go back and visit Mora, the hometown of his ancestors,

and when he got there, he would say that Luther's owned half that region.

Curiously enough, Mora is also going to show up in the life of Luther later.

We'll find out that Luther is at the Diet or the Diet of Verms, and it is there that he is excommunicated,

and as he is sent out of Verms

and he's sent back to Vittenberg,

Frederick the Wise has him kidnapped

and taken to the Vorpord Castle?

Well, the site of the kidnapping was right outside of the town of Mora.

There is where Luther and his party was ambushed. Well back in 1483, Hans and Margaret moved here to Ice Laban, and on November the 10th they gave birth to the son Martin. The next day

November the 11th they walked out their front door of their two-story home with

its gothic style and its timbered second story,

and they walked about 150 meters or so

into the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and there Martin was baptized.
