Summary

A lot of Christians are cast down, losing their peace and joy because they don’t expect attacks on their peace and joy. We’re sad that we’re sad. We’re upset that we’re upset. We say, “it’s not supposed to be like this!” because we don’t have the proper expectations. Before you became a Christian, your main enemy in life was God: someone who loved you, who was doing everything he could to wake you up. But the minute you make peace with God, instantly, all of God’s enemies declare war on you—and they’re not nice enemies. We’re going to look at 1) what the Bible says about peace and joy, 2) our three enemies, and 3) the attacks on assurance. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on February 18, 1990. Series: Fruit of the Spirit. Scripture: Philippians 4:4-9. 0:39.6	And let me just read to you the classic text in the Bible on peace and joy.
0:46.2	Philippians 4, verse 4 to verse 9.
0:51.4	Rejoice. 9. Rejoise in the Lord always I will say it again.
0:58.0	Rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything
1:04.7	but in everything by prayer and petition with Thanksgiving. Present your
1:08.2	request to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding
1:12.2	will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
1:15.0	Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure,
1:20.0	whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or
1:23.3	praise worthy, think about such things. Whatever you have learned or
1:27.3	received or heard from me or seen in me, put it into practice and the God of
1:32.0	peace will be with you.
1:35.0	And let's end the reading of God's word right there.
1:38.9	Well, we've been doing the fruit of the spirit.
