Republic, the end of it. And Professor O'Toole, it's never really the end of it, but I think

we've made a pretty good dent in this. I'd like you to give us a little overview of what what Socrates means at the beginning of book 10 when he says, well, we did it. What's he

mean we did it? We've supposedly shown that the just life is superior to the unjust life.

And I think you have to say that in a real, an important sense, that has been

accomplished by the end of the Republic. Socrates has made a compelling case throughout for the

superiority of a life with a well-ordered soul. That is a life governed by reason that reigns in your most violent bodily passions,

but also your dangerous, spirited passions.

And he's shown that we human beings long for a life that allows us to pursue the truth
