I'm Hugh Hewitt on this Friday.

That music means the Hilddale Dialogue is back.

This week, no Dr. Lerarn, president of Hillsdale College, but Professor Daniel O'Toole is back with us.

He teaches political theory at Hillsdale.

All of our prior dialogues, both with Professor O'Toole and Dr. Arn and many other people,

Hillsdale.com. But today we conclude this book, The Republic, the Republic. We're in Book 10 of the

Republic, the end of it. And Professor O'Toole, it's never really the end of it, but I think

we've made a pretty good dent in this. I'd like you to give us a little overview of what what Socrates means at the beginning of book 10 when he says, well, we did it. What's he

mean we did it? We've supposedly shown that the just life is superior to the unjust life.

And I think you have to say that in a real, an important sense, that has been

accomplished by the end of the Republic. Socrates has made a compelling case throughout for the

superiority of a life with a well-ordered soul. That is a life governed by reason that reigns in your most violent bodily passions,

but also your dangerous, spirited passions.

And he's shown that we human beings long for a life that allows us to pursue the truth

about the most important things.
