The Pope was the first Latin American pontiff and the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years.

He spent his final days serving the church, making brief public appearances this Easter.

He was unable to speak for long periods after being hospitalized for 38 days with double pneumonia.

He also struggled to raise his arms.

The Pope's body was laid in a coffin at 8 p.m. local time, according to the Vatican,

ahead of a certification of death ceremony.
