A period of mourning has begun after the death of Pope Francis at age 88.

His body will be laid in a coffin later today, and the Vatican said people could be able to

visit him lying in state as early as Wednesday.

Leaders from around the world have been releasing tributes, and Francis has been described

as, quote, the people's pope, and quote, a symbol of tolerance.

And St. Peter Square has already started filling up with people paying their respects.

It's a moment of a bit of sadness and at the same time thankfulness and celebration of life.

It's a great disappointment, a great loss, a man who has innovated the church and a man

who has left a great mark.

And this, his absence, causes great pain.

CNN's Barbie Latsunado is in Rome and says we're waiting to hear more about funeral plans.

We're expecting to see world leaders, people from all over the world, the faithful too,

probably especially from Argentina, from where he comes, coming here to Rome to pay their final respects.

A short time after that, we will be witnessing the conclave.

That is when the College of Cardinals will go inside the 16th Chapel and cast their secret ballots

until they agree on who should be Pope Francis's successor.

Only then will we learn the name of the new Pope and what exactly the church can expect going forward.
