Hello everyone and welcome to slash film daily today's Thursday October 31st

0:03.7

2024 on today's very special very spooky episode of the show

0:08.3

we are going to do one of the scariest things I can think of rank these films of Robert Zemecis.

0:15.0

Terrifying directors in modern Hollywood.

0:20.0

My name is Ben Pearson. I am an editor at slashfilm.com and I'm joined on today's episode by

0:23.7

slash film editor Brad Omen. Hey that's me and at slash film editor and chief

0:28.0

film critic Chris Evangelista. Hello. All right guys so just before we really dig into this here, I think the arc is pretty clear when we're talking about Robert Somachus. I feel like nobody, I feel like it's a widely understood thing that this guy kind of shot out of a cannon in his first several movies and made some bona fide classics and then in the past, let's call it 20 years, he's kind of gotten lost in technology.

0:56.0

He's always been a filmmaker who's been obsessed with incorporating technology and

1:01.0

especially motion capture stuff into his work that kind of defined his work in the early 2000s and he's kind of lost his way a little bit.

1:09.0

There have been maybe little blips that we can talk about along the way of things where it seems like maybe he was returning to form a little bit, but when you have films like

1:19.0

Disney's Pinocchio and The Witches and Welcome to Marwin and things like that and your

1:23.2

filmography back to back no less with those three. That's a rough stretch for any

1:28.4

director. So I guess before we really kick things off here do any of you have any other thoughts about

1:34.0

Robert Zamechus aside from that sort of top-level analysis of the career

1:39.6

trajectory that he's had so far? I feel like that pretty much covers it.

1:44.4

You know, I think one of the other things that maybe to appreciate is that at the very least,

1:49.8

even like when the movies are underwhelming or even disappointing he still manages to get very good

1:57.1

performances out of the actors and that's largely because he's working with like incredible casts.

2:02.8

So I guess that's probably like a good thing.

2:05.3

And so even though he does let technology kind of

2:08.1

overshadow his skill as a filmmaker and that's become, you know, seemingly the most important part of his career these days.

2:15.4

You know, I suppose there are worse filmmakers out there.
