There are lots of publications out there that look back at previous history and particularly the history of the poor, but it tends to be the urban poor.

The history of the rural poor is less well documented for some reason.

This week, my guest is Rebecca Smith.

Now, she's just written a book called Rural,

The Lives of the Working Class Countryside,

which explores the realities of life in the country

for those who make a living from it.

Now, I met Rebecca at one of our favourite places

at Mu-Ravenside Country Park near Falkirk.

I'm interested in estates, because that's how I grew up. I lived on a country estate in Falkirk. I'm interested in estates because that's how I grew up.

I lived on a country estate in Cumbria.

My dad was a forester, and we have lived on estates our whole lives, really, on different

ones moving around the country in Yorkshire and Bedford as well.

And I'm kind of drawn to them, mainly because that my childhood, you know,

it's what I was brought up with. I remember when I grew up on the estate we did, it was a big,
