For thousands of years, people in various cultures have believed in reincarnation,

the idea that we live a series of lives in different bodies.

In some places, like India, the belief is widely accepted.

In the 1950s, the idea of reincarnation burst into the American consciousness in a dramatic way.

A Colorado housewife named Virginia Tai underwent a series of hypnotic regressions

in which she reported memories of being an Irish woman named Brydie Murphy in the 1800s.

This led to a series of articles and popular newspapers and magazines as well as a book and a

major motion picture called The Search for Brydie Murphy. They electrified America and began what

is called The Brydie Murphy craze. Many people thought this provided proof of life after death

in general and of reincarnation in particular. American culture was profoundly influenced

with many new people being open to and even becoming believers in reincarnation.

So what is reincarnation? How might it work and what does the evidence really say?
