Summary

It is SO strange that a new parenting trend emerges every 5-10 years.

For generations, there was basically just "parenting"...passed down from one generation to another.

Multi-generational wisdom, essentially...very Family Teams.

But with the disintegration of generational families and the rise of hyper-individualism, parents these days are left to come up with their own methods, focusing a little on this, then a little on that.

Not only is it dangerous to use an untested parenting method, MOST of them that come out these days (formerly in books, now often via social media influencers), are extremely secular and certainly not wise (the fear of God being the beginning of wisdom...).

Jeremy digs into this issue, and how to root yourself in a solid Biblical understanding of fatherhood and motherhood, joined by his wife April and Donna Cheung.

On this episode, we talk about:

0:00 Intro

0:48 The rise of "parenting trends"

2:35 Why modern culture has led to so many different parenting philosophies (clip)

8:30 The risks of being a young mother in the information age

19:10 Why most parenting studies are bunk and how to weigh advice

26:44 Potential for deception, especially with secular parenting books

32:37 Don't go down the "way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death"

If you guys look at those parenting books, if it's some kind of brand new trend that you never heard of before, just see it.

It's just slathered with margarine. It's just seeping with seed oil. Just stick with, you know, the good full fat butter that we now know has always been good for us.

Hey, everybody, welcome back to the podcast.

So we're going to do a motherhood episode. I'm joined

0:39.1

with Donna Chung and my wife April. Donna, how are you doing today? Very good. I'm excited to be back.

0:45.1

It's awesome. So Donna's up in Vancouver, Vancouver, Canada area. And yeah, we're constantly trying to

0:51.9

understand the different ways that especially motherhood

0:55.8

parenting has been framed, like when you contrast kind of ancient ways with kind of modern

1:02.4

ways. So I've been fascinated by trying to understand why is it that we have different parenting

1:08.9

philosophies that come in and out like their clothing trends.

1:12.9

It's like, it's a, this is, this is not normal. It's not normal for every generation and now

1:18.3

almost every five to 10 years for a totally new philosophy of parenting to suddenly emerge.

1:24.7

And so I was really fascinated by this book. I read it a couple years ago by

1:29.6

Mikkeleine Ducleff. She's a, I think she worked for NPR. She's a journalist and she went around the

1:35.1

world to all these ancient cultures and just watched how they parent. And she was a mom of a young

1:41.9

girl and she just was shocked that their parenting intuitions were almost the

1:47.3

exact opposite of Western parenting intuitions. And this was not from a religious perspective

1:54.8

at all, but she wrote this book called Hunt, Gather, Gather, Parent, and kind of explored these different ways of thinking about

2:03.6

parenting. So I'm excited for you guys to watch this clip with me. Louise Perry, who we love,

2:09.7

I love listening to her. She's a thought leader in England around what is happening, particularly within the feminist movement. She has a podcast
