The United States, In 1964, America was in the midst of great upheaval. The civil rights movement was in full swing, and Americans were rethinking the fundamental principles of their society.

They debated how to tackle issues like racial and gender-based discrimination, poverty, and the environment.

President Lyndon B. Johnson had signed the civil rights bill and was on the verge of implementing his great society programs,

which represented a major expansion of government involvement in the country's social and

economic life. He hoped that government intervention could solve some of society's age-old

problems. In the fall of 1964, Johnson won a landslide victory over Republican Barry Goldwater,

winning 44 out of 50 states. It seemed that Johnson had won a mandate for his vision. In the

midst of all of this, a modern conservative movement emerged. Although Barry Goldwater was its initial spokesperson, a new

star had risen from his defeat. During the campaign, Ronald Reagan, known to Americans as a B-movie

actor and TV show host, delivered a speech that spoke for those who opposed Johnson's policies,

who believed that they would do nothing

to solve society's problems and would merely encroach on the rights of American citizens.

That speech would put Ronald Reagan on the political map and lead to his election, as governor

of California just two years later. As you listen, think of the insurgent tone of Reagan's speech.

Before modern conservatism had gone mainstream, it was seen as a fringe movement within the

Republican Party. And I wonder how many people in the audience or anyone watching at home

imagined that they were listening to a future American president. Enjoy the show.
