Summary

Why is it hard for us to ask for help? Today on the podcast, Emma Dotter takes us through Psalm 64 where David is asking God for emotional protection from discouragement and physical protection from harm. It can be hard to ask for help from others and the Lord, whether that is from fear of being vulnerable or a desire to be self-sufficient. When we don’t ask for help, we reinforce the idea that we should do things on our own instead of depending on the Lord. Thanks to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we have full freedom to come before Him in need. When we ask God for help like David does in Psalm 64, we can move from hopelessness to joy, gratitude and praise for the Lord.

podcast with your host, Emma, daughter. Thanks for joining. Today, we're reading Psalm 64, a Psalm that

0:13.9

begins with a plea for help. Now, back in 2023, the Harvard Business Review put out a report

0:20.0

discussing why people have trouble asking for help.

0:23.5

Their studies found that people don't ask for help often because they have a fear of being

0:28.3

vulnerable. They feel a need to be independent. They fear losing control. They fear rejection. They

0:34.3

over-emopathize with others, or they're ruled by a sense of victimhood,

0:37.6

meaning, poor me, I'm not worthy of being helped. Now, sometimes people are marked by all of

0:43.8

these factors, other times maybe just one. But regardless, the study found that it is possible

0:50.1

to change behavior. It's possible to identify why it's hard for someone to ask for help and to move

0:55.5

forward and becoming better at asking for it. When we don't ask for help, especially help from God,

1:01.8

we begin to reinforce the incorrect idea that we can do things on our own or that we should be

1:07.5

able to do things on our own. And when we try to do things on our own,

1:11.2

we grow exhausted, worn out, disheartened, discouraged,

1:14.8

or maybe even depressed.

1:16.3

And I would imagine that none of us

1:18.3

want to be marked by those feelings.

1:20.2

Now, the failure to ask for help

1:22.8

isn't the only thing that can cause those negative feelings,

1:25.9

but it can be a contributing factor. On the other

1:29.3

hand, when we're able to ask for help, we're able to reap the benefits that David experiences

in this Psalm. By asking for help, David, he's able to move from a feeling of hopelessness to a
