Summary

In the early morning hours of November 8th, 1992, 19-year-old nursing student Mischelle Lawless was found dead, just outside Benton, Missouri, on the side of Interstate 70. Investigators claimed the evidence suggested Mischelle had fought for her life, ran from her attacker and was pursued and caught before being returned to her car where she was shot three times in the back of the head. After questioning Mischelle’s boyfriend and friends, the case went cold until April 7th of 1993, when 17 year old Josh Kezer was arrested and charged with the murder of Mischelle Lawless. Kezer’s arrest was based on information provided to police by two jailhouse informants, and supporting testimony of a witness who claimed to see Mischelle and Josh arguing at a party the night of her murder, as well as another witness who placed Kezer at the scene of the crime. Despite the lack of physical evidence and the questionable credibility of the witnesses and informants, Josh Kezer was found guilty of second degree murder and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. However, sixteen years later Josh Kezer was exonerated when discovered that the eyewitness placing Kezer at the scene had changed his account of that evening multiple times. Kezer sued for wrongful conviction and won.

At TFL, we're making journeys safer for everyone, and that includes improving safety on London's roads.

0:07.4

That's why we and London boroughs are lowering more speed limits to 20 miles per hour,

0:12.4

because 20 miles per hour roads have already reduced collisions resulting in deaths or

serious injuries by 24%. That is how we're making journeys in London safer and brighter for everyone.

Hello everybody, welcome back to Crime Weekly, I'm Stephanie Harlow.

0:45.9

And I'm Derek Levasser.

0:47.2

Okay, so we're diving into part three of the Michelle Lawless case.

0:52.5

You have anything you want to talk about before we dive in, because I think we have a longer

0:55.6

episode today, which is my hint to tell you we shouldn't talk about anything before.

1:00.4

We should not talk about anything. Let me just ask you a question. Are we going to have a moment

1:05.8

tonight to maybe address the again? How did Michelle get out of the car? Because all I want to say,

1:10.4

and I will, let me just say this quick, and we don't have to address it again, because it's something

1:13.2

that our editor Shannon brought to my attention first for this episode as she was editing last week's

1:18.4

episode. And then ironically, you guys mentioned it in the comments. So kudos to you, but just to throw

1:24.2

one of the wrinkle out there. Shannon and many of you suggested that maybe another theory for looking

1:31.2

at alternate theories that Michelle was stopped by someone who was a cop or was pretending to be a

1:38.0

police officer. It would explain her being at the car, her having her dome light on, her rolling

1:42.9

down the window. Again, total speculation, total theory, but shout out to Shannon and the rest of you

1:48.7

who said it in the comments, because I didn't think about it. And when we're thinking about all the

1:53.3

scenarios, that out of box type thinking is what can sometimes solve the case. So kudos to everybody

1:58.5

out there. That's all I wanted to say. Yeah, I mean that I saw that theory in the comments.
