American people. Therefore, I will vote to keep the government open and not shut it down.

That was Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announcing that he would vote for the Republican

stopgap spending bill today.

The Senate hasn't until midnight to pass it, to avoid a government shutdown.

But the GOP needs the support of eight Democrats.

Schumer's decision to back it stunned a lot of his party, with some still urging senators

to keep fighting the bill.

But Schumer was clear it wasn't a choice he wanted to make.

This in my view is no choice at all.

While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse.

He argued that a government shutdown would give President Donald Trump and Elon Musk more power

to make federal cuts.

A second federal judge has ruled that thousands of probationary employees, laid off by the Trump

administration, must have their jobs temporarily reinstated.

The new restraining order covers 18 agencies and will last two weeks.

It comes after a federal judge handling a separate lawsuit in California reversed mass layoffs

of probationary workers.
