So this kind of almost quasi-religious fiction around artificial intelligence is something that is creating

something like the narcissus illusion, where people are looking at machine reflections of their own

intelligence, and instead of seeing themselves, they think they see an image of something greater

than themselves, something that transcends

them in the way that Narcissus, when he looked at the reflection in the water, thought he saw

this incredibly beautiful boy that captivated him, that took his attention away from his own

concerns and his own life because he was obsessed

with what he thought was this other boy in the water.

And a lot of AI evangelists are stoking a similar kind of obsession with the idea of artificial

intelligence.

They want us to lose sight of what we're really looking at when we

interact with AI. That's Shannon Valor. She's a philosopher with a deep admiration for how

artificial intelligence can make the world a better place. But she's also fearful of the cost

if we lose sight of the fact that its seductive appeal

can lull us into believing AI machines know better than we do. Her new book is called

the AI mirror. So AI is pretty much in everybody's life now. We're pretty much either

all using AI or being used by it.

Yep. Or being told that your life is going to be changed by it, whether you want it or not.

So how much of that is true? Well, a lot of it's true, but not in the way that a lot of people are being led to believe.

So I think there's no question that AI technologies will continue to grow, expand, advance,

and become used in our lives in a lot of different ways,
