Summary

There has been a wave of backlash against the government's announcement that it intends to privatise Channel 4. What's behind their decision? Some argue it could be politically motivated given that Channel 4 has historically been a left-leaning news organisation.

Also on the podcast, Iain Anderson has resigned as the UK's LQBTQ business champion over the government's u-turn on trans conversation therapy. He said the decision to exclude trans people from the conversion therapy ban was 'deeply damaging'.

All to be discussed as Cindy Yu talks to Isabel Hardman and Katy Balls.

Today Nadine Dorris has announced that the government would have decided to put

0:29.2

Channel 4 currently a public broadcaster out for private sale. Katie has something

0:33.6

that's been talked about for a while now. What are the ins and outs of this?

0:47.1

and selling it to private owner will give it the tools and freedom to flourish and

0:50.8

private as a public service broadcaster long into the future. Channel 4 figures take a different

0:57.9

view as delay but as do some Tory MPs. I mean, Kirsty Elso, I think probably has put it most

1:02.8

succinctly saying it's the load of utter twaddle and that's the location, location presenter.

1:07.9

But also what was interesting was this was announced last night and this morning

1:14.0

series of senior Tories came out to criticise it. You had Reef Davidson, the former leader of the

1:20.2

Scottish Conservatives criticising it. You had Tom Tuggenhardt, Damien Greene from the One Nation

1:27.2

group. So I think it's MPs that you would see traditionally as being on the left with the party

1:31.2

but they're pointing out that that show was instrumental in Channel 4. So actually they're saying,

1:37.0

well, this is Tory to have Channel 4 as it is and not privatised. In terms of the motivation,

1:44.0

I think that there's been interesting comments that I don't know if they meant to be as they

1:49.0

perceived but you have Julian Knight who is the chair of the DCMS Select Committee saying that
