I am joined as always by my friend and comrade, Danny Bessner, and we are pleased and

grateful to welcome to the program, Marshall Steinbaum, Assistant Professor of Economics

at the University of Utah Senior Fellow Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Utah,

senior fellow in higher education finance at the Jane Family Institute, who is coming on short notice,

and by the way, he's got an article coming up in the Boston Review about the failure of Biden-era economic policy.

Failure on Biden, I can't believe it.

Not signing on to that one. Yeah, I don't believe it. But he has come.

Yeah, I don't know.

I don't know if we can endorse that.

But Marshall is here on extremely short notice,

so we are very grateful to talk about the tariffs.

Donald Trump has imposed,

25% tariffs on something from Mexico

and 25% tariffs on some things from Canada and 10% on China.

Basically, Marshall, let's start simple. What the hell just happened this weekend?

Yeah, I mean, needless to say, a departure from the orthodoxy that has governed

U.S. trade policy in most of our lifetimes. I mean, we've seen some ramping up of this

with the China tariffs that began in Trump's first term and that were basically left in place

by Biden and in some cases increased, but nowhere near as across the board is this. So those,

the tariffs that have been implemented to date are not blanket tariffs on all imports from these three countries
