On Tales of the Town, we've taken you on a journey of Black Oakland.

From our ancestors' arrival after escaping white terrorism of the Jim Crow South,

they're maneuvering through Red Line neighborhoods and lack of job opportunities,

building their own communities and businesses,

fighting back against police violence and sparking a revolutionary movement

via the Black Panther Party, creating whole genres of music, developing a sports culture

that the whole world has appreciated, and the black population's current fight against

social economic and political oppression via gentrification,

houseless, and police terrorism.

But this wouldn't be a story about the history of Oakland

without telling the history of the stolen native land that the town is on.

And throughout this episode, we are going to take you back to the beginning, to the origins

of Oakland, and who this land really belongs to, the Huachin, Aloney People.
