Summary

We're taking the Schadenfreude approach to the chaos that Trump's tariffs have unleashed upon Europe (and the rest of the world). This week, our favourite Luxembourger Nina Lamparski joins Dominic to explain why sales of Elon Musk's Tesla cars have already plunged in Europe and could now fare even worse thanks to his best bud's trade policies. We're also joined by Turkish political scientist Ezgi Başaran to discuss why President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is feeling liberated in a time that's been dubbed 'springtime for autocrats' — and whether the huge protests against him could change that. Plus, is Spain's clever new food waste law as good as it sounds?    This episode was recorded on Tuesday night, before the EU's announcement of retaliatory tariffs... and before the White House's announcement of a 90-day pause on higher tariffs for dozens of countries. At any rate, at the time of publication the world economy is still looking decidedly chaotic, so we hope you still find this an enjoyable and useful listen.  Thanks for listening. This podcast has been produced in cooperation with Uranet Plus, the leading radio network for EU News. Hello and welcome to the Europeans hosted by me, Dominic Kramer in Amsterdam, and a very special guest host.

0:41.1

Our favourite Luxembourger in Paris, reporter and fact-checker extraordinaire, Nina Lamparski.

0:48.7

Moyen, Nina.

0:50.2

Moyen, Dominic. Thank you for this very warm welcome.

0:53.8

I have a feeling I am also the only Luxemberger

0:57.0

that you know in Paris, to be fair. But I still feel very special for being here and to represent

1:04.3

the mighty nation of Luxembourg on air. I think that's the first. So very pleased. I'm also a bit nervous because, well, this is Katie's

1:14.1

baby. Yeah. I know there's been another one, obviously, since then, and there'll be sooner third,

1:19.2

but this is kind of the firstborn. And I feel like that holds a special responsibility. So

1:24.4

I don't want to bring any disrepute to the great house of the Europeans, basically.

1:29.5

Well, I totally trust you with putting her co-hosting hat on.

1:34.2

And before we move forward, I just wanted to mention that this may be your first time co-hosting,

1:38.9

but you've been on the show before.

1:40.4

You were actually one of our first ever guests in January 2018 when you came onto the

1:46.0

show to talk about a comeback of the endangered language of Luxembourgish. How's it looking six,

1:52.0

seven years later? Has the language come back? I am pleased to inform that Luxembourg still speak

1:58.3

Luxemurgish, although I have recently been told by someone there

2:01.9

that we are now in the minority, just generally in the country.

2:05.6

There's like 48% of Luxemurgis, and then the rest are foreigners,

2:10.6

which I think is great, because obviously you need people in this very small country.

2:14.6

But, yeah, I think that was one of the hardest-hitting stories I've done as a journalist

2:18.7

in recent times.
