The image of God and modernity.

0:04.0

The idea of the image of God is a big idea,

0:08.0

and it invites a large-scale ramble through the history of ideas.

0:15.0

So I hope to lead this ramble for you through some big ideas

0:20.0

that are important for at least

0:22.6

getting in touch with and I hope to do it without too much side-tracking but

0:28.0

1:24.5

they'll come up later. But instead, I've picked Nietzsche and Hobbes to represent

1:30.7

the modern legacy with regard to the image of God. But let's begin with the Bible itself.

1:38.2

We would be naive to think that the Bible doesn't have philosophy. In fact, it has many

1:43.7

philosophies.

1:45.0

The image of God ties together many different biblical thinkers,

1:49.0

many sacred authors, beginning with the author of Genesis.

1:53.0

So we begin simple with Genesis.
