Summary

In this episode, we will talk about what I call the Disney narcissistic parents - about their behaviour when they are with the kids, the effects of that on our children, and the responses it triggers in us. We will talk about dealing with this kind of narcissistic parents, which is one of the most challenging parts of co-parenting with a narcissist.

Although it might be extremely challenging to co-parent with a narcissist, we must focus on teaching our kids values, showing them love, ensuring a secure connection and installing a healthy sense of self in them. The Disney narcissistic parent will flood them with expensive toys, new cell phones or video games, but none of that can compete with the kind of relationship we can offer to them based on trust, love and a deep connection.

0:39.0	I see this so many times and obviously many in my community and on a one-to-one are trying
0:44.4	to parent with a narcissist.
0:46.8	Now, I've done other episodes that I'd really, really encourage you to go and watch and listen
0:51.5	to around a child's trauma response to a narcissistic parent.
0:56.9	Because I think as parents, when we realise we can't co-parent with a narcissist, you can only
1:02.2	parallel parent. And that means disengaging, minimal contact and just, again, being very child-centric
1:09.3	in all of that, that when we start to look at the
1:13.4	parenting, there's lots of things that can come up for you as an individual. And I want to talk to
1:19.1	you. And I've just been on holiday, actually. And as I was lying there, this really came up for me
1:25.9	because I was getting quite a few messages from other people whose children were with the narcissistic parent and they were being bought stuff.
1:35.4	They were being taken on these lavish holidays.
1:38.6	They were just literally having loads thrown at them where the other parent was struggling,
1:45.6	didn't have much money. And there was a lot of stuff coming up, feeling like I'm doing
1:51.5	all the work. I'm getting all the brunt of all of this. When the kids come back,
1:56.2	they're shouting, they're aggressive, they are anxious before they go. I get all of this. Then when they go to the narcissistic parent, it's like Disney. They're well-behaved. They get X, Y, Z. The narcissistic parent just throws everything at them in an attempt to try and get the children to favouritise that particular parent.
2:19.9	So this is why I wanted to do this episode on the Disney narcissistic parent,
2:24.8	because that's what I tend to call them, a narcissistic parent who really looks at stuff
