But I never thought I'd say it's a program of Academy Award

nominees, but today on the program,

we'll listen to a favorite episode

from the Unfictional Archives, featuring Luke Davies, winner of a British Academy

BAFTA Award and a nominee for an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for the highly acclaimed film Lion.

The Man Knows How to Tell a Story.

And on an episode we first broadcast in 2011,

he joined up with two friends from his childhood in Sydney, Australia for a story that in some ways

is about stories and the way they change in our heads over time, like the way a story about

teenage drunken brawling, reckless driving, and kidnapping

can all seem epic and hilarious when you're telling the story with your friends more than 35 years later.

On a summer evening, a convoy of a dozen cars

makes its way down a quiet residential street.

Most of the cars are banged up, broken lights, dented fenders,

and the people in the cars look damaged too, bruised and bloody, especially the

three teenagers held prisoner in their own car.

We're completely out of control. I remember just thinking someone's driving my car and there's two of them are captive in another car.

We were pretty scared. Those bokes were twice the size of us. I had steam coming out my ears. I was so

angry with everything that had happened and with the fact that I didn't do anything
