Summary

After months of escalating tensions, President Vladimir V. Putin took to state television on Thursday to declare the start of a “special military operation” in Ukraine. In the prelude to the invasion and as Russian troops launched their attacks, we spoke to our colleagues on the ground as they hunkered down to cover the fighting. Guest: Sabrina Tavernise, a national correspondent for The New York Times; Anton Troianovski, the Moscow bureau chief for The Times and Michael Schwirtz, an investigative reporter for The Times.

0:05.0	I'm in Kiev, Ukraine, and it's about 1120 at night.
0:12.0	About an hour ago, we got information from some colleagues that
0:17.0	there will likely be an attack tonight in Kiev and in a number of other cities in Ukraine.
0:23.0	We're gathering all of our stuff together,
0:26.0	and I'm going to put a bunch of stuff in, a bunch of bottles of water,
0:33.0	a little contraption that powers a computer off of a car battery,
0:37.0	headlamp, a bunch of extra power supplies.
0:42.0	And the plan is to go into the bathrooms of this hotel if there is a bombing.
0:48.0	They are the furthest internal and away from the windows in the hotel,
0:51.0	and they're big, deep closets in front of them that are also protective.
0:55.0	Looking out the window, this beautiful city just started to rain,
1:05.0	kind of misty, really hard to imagine that there could be major damage
1:14.0	in this city of millions of people.
1:22.0	I feel nervous, and my adrenaline starts going,
1:29.0	which means the way I focus and remember what I'm seeing,
1:36.0	and witness is to write down notes in my notebook with timestamps.
1:44.0	So here's the first one.
1:47.0	It's 1128 in Kiev, and I'm putting all my gear into an empty bag.
