Unfictional is a program of stories and personal documentaries and today on the program a dairy farmer in a small picturesque New England town who left his house to milk the cows early one icy cold morning in 1957 was never seen alive again.

It was a murder that was never solved in large part because many of the residents of the town of Newbury

Vermont refused to talk about it especially those who knew what happened that

night.

Producer William Dahlberg grew up in Vermont.

At one time he lived just down the road from the barn where the murder took place.

And he produced this story about a legendary murder and the town that remains silent.

It's like an abscess that's never healed. If you have an abscess, you open it and drain it.

And this abscess has never been opened and drain and it will never he will always

be there.

I don't think now there is any way of arriving at any further conclusion about it except it's now history.

On the outside, Newbury, Vermont has every appearance of being the quintessential New England

village.

Nestled along the Connecticut River, it is a place that postcards are made for,

with the village green, white church spires,

the old brick school building,

all surrounded by the rolling green hillsides of Vermont and New Hampshire just across the river.
