Summary

Do you ever have a project that seems to pop up on your annual goals list year after year, but never gets done? This episode is an exploration of how to tackle these projects and goals. Sarah gets personal, sharing her own Big Daunting Projects and some questions that might be worth asking about things that show up again and again (and again) on yearly lists. Questions to ask yourself when it comes to these big (and possibly scary, or emotionally difficulty) goals: 1. DO YOU REALLY WANT TO DO IT? 2. DO YOU HAVE TIME for said project? If so, specifically where? If you can’t come up with calendar space to work on it . . . you probably don’t have time. (Weekly template can also help with this when it comes to habits!) a) HOW MUCH TIME would you need to work on it, estimated, to make SOMETHING happen? b) If that's more than you have, DOES IT BELONG in someday maybe? 5. IS THERE A WAY of BRINGING IN DEADLINES even if not naturally there? 6. IS THERE A NATURAL WAY TO BREAK IT UP into less scary pieces? 7. CAN YOU MAKE IT LESS SCARY from an emotional standpoint? 8. CAN YOU GET HELP WITH IT? (Maybe even just a little bit of help?) 9. CAN YOU FIND ACCOUNTABILITY? ------------------------------------------ Jenni Kayne: Find perfect transitional spring pieces at at jennikayne.com. Hello and welcome to Best Laid Plans.

0:11.0

This is your host Sarah Hart Unger and this is the podcast where we talk all things planning

0:15.1

and planning adjacent. Today we are going to talk about long-term projects.

0:26.2

And as I was trying to come up with the title for this episode, I came up with big daunting projects.

0:32.2

And then that made me think of Big Dumb Cups, the S&L skit about Stanley Cups.

0:35.5

So what did Big Dumb Cups have in common with big daunting projects?

0:38.2

Not much, but they kind of sound the same. And if you haven't watched that skit, what are you even doing? Because it's really, really funny, especially if you

0:42.6

happen to have maybe 18 or tween who owns a large collection of Stanleys. Okay, but our digression

0:49.3

is over. We are going to focus today on large projects that I don't want to call them dumb.

0:54.3

They're certainly not dumb.

0:55.3

They're very important to me, actually.

0:57.7

But just there are certain things that tend to go on annual lists year after year,

1:04.9

at least in my experience.

1:06.4

I know I have some things that fit this category.

1:09.3

And after a time can start to kind of weigh on you a

1:12.4

little bit because you see yourself wanting to achieve something and setting out to do it,

1:19.8

but instead prioritizing other things and then just having years go by when you haven't done

1:25.5

the thing that you wanted to do it. don't worry, I'm going to give

1:28.0

you plenty of examples to pull from in my own personal life. But I'm also guessing I'm not the

1:33.6

only one who has certain things that just kind of get pushed ahead. And that can become

1:38.6

frustrating after a time. I'm generally very gentle with myself when I don't complete a to-do list or do every goal in a given time frame.

1:47.3

After all, I mean, that is kind of what I recommend doing for a system is having very time frame-specific goals.
