Summary

In this inspiring episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta sits down with Maggie Berghoff, a functional medicine expert and national best-selling author of Eat to Treat: Your Three-Step Plan to Reduce Inflammation, Detoxify Your Life, and Heal Your Body. Maggie shares her transformative journey from traditional nurse practitioner to functional medicine advocate, driven by her own health struggles with unexplained fatigue, bloating, and skin issues. Through functional medicine, she healed herself and now helps others do the same.

Maggie’s Eat to Treat framework is a three-step system that gets to the root of health challenges by addressing inflammation and creating an optimal environment for healing. She emphasizes the importance of identifying root causes, detoxifying your home and products, and nourishing your body with anti-inflammatory foods. Her approach shifts the focus from quick fixes to long-term solutions for vibrant health and glowing skin.

She dives deep into the hidden culprits of skin issues, such as chronic inflammation, heavy metal toxicity, and poor gut health. Maggie explains how modern lifestyles overload the liver and disrupt the gut-brain-skin axis, leading to dull, acne-prone, or inflamed skin. Practical tips like swapping toxic household cleaners for clean alternatives and incorporating antioxidant-rich foods can significantly improve your skin and overall health.

This episode offers actionable advice for anyone seeking to take control of their wellness journey. Maggie’s insights remind us that radiant skin starts from within, and her holistic approach offers a path to lasting beauty and health. Tune in to learn how small changes can make a big impact!

And I can't wait to chat with her today. I'm sure a lot of

Maggie Berghoff. Welcome to show, Maggie. Thank you so much for having me.

0:36.9

Yeah, no, it's exciting to host you. And I'm excited to learn from you today because I think this is such

0:41.8

an interesting topic, you know, especially when it comes to just overall help, but also skin

0:46.9

health, you know, and I can't wait to dive in, but I'd love to learn about you a little bit.

0:51.2

You know, if you could tell us, walk us down memory lane. What led you to, you know, writing your book and going into this field?

0:58.3

Yeah. So I always wanted to be in the health and wellness field even as a young girl. And so I went

1:04.0

to Vanderbilt University and became a nurse practitioner. And from there, after a couple

1:09.1

years of practicing traditional medicine, I found

1:12.4

functional medicine really through my own health problems, like my skin breaking out and other

1:18.2

things like constantly bloated no matter what I ate, feeling dizzy, feeling headachey, being

1:23.8

tired during the day, even though I slept all night. So I had all these symptoms going on.

1:33.9

And the traditional medicine model, whenever I went to doctor's offices, they had no idea why this was happening and also no answers for how to fix it. And I'm a little stubborn. So I did not

1:40.3

accept that. And I dove into the world of, you know, healing the body with functional

1:45.8

medicine, integrated nutrition, mindset, lifestyle, and did just that. I healed everything that

1:51.9

was going on with me in six months or less, just fully got myself back, even better than

1:57.8

before. And that's when I really made this career pivot instead of

2:02.3

practicing traditional medicine as a nurse practitioner. I made a pivot and opened my own

2:07.6

online functional medicine consulting business. And that's really how that all started and helping

2:13.5

people in that way. And the book really came from after seeing lots and lots of clients
