Valerie Hauser, Director of the Office of Native American Affairs at the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, talks with J about her work protecting indigenous culture. They discuss the role she plays advising the US government, understanding land-based spirituality and Traditional Knowledge, working through bureaucracy, the disheartening reality of how many people just don’t care, burnout and demoralization over the last four years, and the continued fortitude to fight for what is right and embody justice and equality for everyone.

0:35.8	Those of you've been around for a while, you might be used to it, but I just, I got to get some shit off my chest today.
0:45.1	Things haven't been going very well in small and big ways.
0:52.4	First, the saga of my mouth pain continues.

0:58.6	Everything was great.
1:00.2	Two weeks ago, I went in, and they went to put in the permanent bridge, and it fit
1:06.7	pretty good, but the gum line had receded some, so the enamel in the front didn't go all the way up
1:12.4	to the gum line, and it looked a little bit not so great. And she said, well, you know, I can send it
1:18.7	back and they'll fix it. Or if you don't care, we can just leave it like it is. And I thought,
1:25.4	you know, I'm paying a lot of money for this.
1:28.1	And it's the thing you only do once.
1:30.6	Send it back.
1:32.3	So today I go in a couple weeks later to finally get the new fixed up one put in.
1:40.0	And it looks great.
1:41.3	They fixed the enamel thing, but it doesn't fit that great.
