So today we're going to talk about oxidation, a very exciting topic.

0:27.6

Originally, this meant adding oxygen to a compound and the losing of an electron.

0:34.2

When you lose an electron from an atom, you create a free radical.

0:38.1

So these atoms have paired electrons.

0:41.6

As an example, you have this plate and you're spinning it, right, on your finger.

0:47.8

And it has two weights on it.

0:49.2

And you can balance that plate as you spin it.

0:52.5

But a free radical is when you remove an electron and you have what's called an unpaired

0:58.3

electron.

0:59.5

So it just has one weight on a plate and you're spinning this thing.

1:03.0

Well guess what?

1:04.0

It's going to fly off and break something.

1:06.5

Well in the body, it's going to start damaging tissue, DNA, et cetera.

1:10.8

So that's the problem with free radicals.

1:14.0

And it can come from adding an oxygen to some other compound.

1:19.5

Now the definition has expanded to the creation of free radicals without the oxygen.

1:24.5

Another example to be biting into an apple.

1:26.4

If you leave it exposed to oxygen, it's going to turn brown, right?

1:29.4

But if you add an antioxidant like lemon, it doesn't turn brown.
