Summary

When killing is crucial, not just convenient... Choose the right tool for the task.

Folks, I resisted addressing this trendy topic of using small calibers on big game for a long time. But I've had so many requests to do so, I can no longer take the easy road. Here's my blunt, fact- and science-based opinion on the practice of using small calibers loaded with target-type bullets on big game.

Folks, I'm about to do something I really don't want to do. And that is address the modern

0:07.2

trend that shooting big game with small cartridges isn't just possible. It's maybe the best thing to do,

0:16.0

right? I resisted this for, well, weeks, months since it started for several reasons.

0:24.5

I've got a bunch of notes here that I'm going to refer to throughout this discussion.

0:30.6

You know, I honestly believe this is a flash in the pan trend.

0:35.5

I thought it would blow over in months. I think now it's going to take years

0:40.5

to blow over, which is regrettable. I believe mankind repeats his mistakes and often the only way to

0:50.1

return to the straight and narrow path is by sad experience.

0:56.4

And unfortunately, I think a lot of the guys that have gotten on this small cartridges

1:03.0

for big game trend will eventually come around to recognizing that was probably a bad idea.

1:10.9

And we're going to talk a little bit about why I've had so many listeners requests that I

1:18.6

address this, that I can't ignore it any longer.

1:22.4

I had originally kind of hope to do like the royal family does in England. I'm allowed to refer to them,

1:30.4

right? Because my wife's British, where they don't validate small scandals or, you know,

1:38.7

fooferra trends, whatever, by acknowledging it at all. Once they acknowledge it, it becomes a big scandal or a big

1:46.1

trend. And I just did not feel in the least inclined to address this because, candidly, I think

1:55.4

it's foolish. And I don't want to give those who promote it a platform on my podcast, and I don't want to

2:04.3

inadvertently farther the trend myself. Now, I'm not trying to say that small caliber

2:10.5

cartridges aren't good for certain types of big game hunting. I do think the recent 22 Creedmoor, the 22 arc, and if we're fortunate

2:22.0

enough to see it introduced here in the next while, a 25 Creedmoor are terrific for deer-sized

2:28.4

games such as Coos deer, Ponghorn Antelope, White Tail Deer, even most mule deer, even big ones, right?

2:36.4

But there's a limit to any practical application of any tool, right?
