He was placed on life support, but his brain had been deprived of oxygen for too long, and after two days, Levi died. His foster mother, Jennifer Lee Wilson, admitted to police that in an attempt to control his behavior, she had laid her 341-pound body on top of the 91-pound boy. Surveillance camera footage proved that Levi lay motionless under Jennifer for over eight minutes before she moved, asking if he was faking. During those three days, Bella went from a happy, bubbly baby to alternately crying hysterically and becoming quiet and withdrawn. Then her parents noticed a distinctive pinching bruise on Bella’s thigh. Although she was covered with injuries from head to toe, her cause of death was a septic infection from untreated pneumonia. The three adults in the home—Raylee’s father, his girlfriend, and her sister—were charged in her death. That episode barely scratched the surface. Now, I’m retelling Raylee’s full story with the help of her mom, Janice Wriston, who fought for Raylee’s entire eight years to protect her daughter from the girl’s own father, Marty Browning Jr. The way the press told the story, Marty was a negligent father who merely failed to protect his daughter. The truth about Marty is far darker than that. This is the story of a sweet, loving little girl whose mom called her Sunshine. Last week, I told you the story of two-year-old Arianna Starkey, whose father, Austin Starkey, failed to protect her from his homicidal girlfriend, Destani Neel. Both Austin and Destani were sentenced to prison for their roles in Arianna’s brutal death. Note: I'm honored to release this episode on what would be Arianna's sixth birthday. On January 8, 2021, 27-year-old Destani Neel called 911, reporting that her boyfriend’s daughter was having trouble breathing. Although two-year-old Arianna Starkey was rushed to the hospital, she never regained consciousness, and she took her last breath two days later. Destani—a mother herself—had a story prepared for investigators, but her details kept changing, and it was immediately apparent that Arianna’s death was not an accident. This is the story of a little girl who loved her big brother, her pink boots, and having tea parties with her Nana. It’s also the story of a mother who took out all of her frustrations on her boyfriend’s innocent toddler—and a man whose intervention could have saved his daughter’s life. From time to time, instead of covering an individual child’s story, I tackle a broader topic, such as my past episodes about hot car deaths and medical child abuse. While the topic of today’s episode doesn’t necessarily intersect with that of child abuse and neglect, it definitely intersects with this podcast’s purpose: to protect children. For this episode, I spoke with Christi Brown, the executive director of the Judah Brown Project. When Indianapolis police responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive child on April 9, 2024, they couldn’t have guessed the horrific circumstances of the victim’s life and death. 5-year-old Kinsleigh Welty, who weighed only 21 pounds, was clearly malnourished. She had a bruise on her face and fecal matter on her body and matted into her hair, which was crawling with lice. Kinsleigh was pronounced dead at Riley Hospital for Children the same day. This is the story of yet another child failed by Indiana’s child welfare system. It’s also the story of yet another case of reunification gone wrong and a child who thrived in the care of others, only to die at the hands of a biological parent. In Episode 102, I told you the story of two-year-old Fallon Fridley, a precious little girl in Georgia whose babysitter, a close family friend, tortured and killed her in December 2020. The attack was caught on the babysitter’s in-home video surveillance system, and police found incriminating search terms on Kirstie Flood’s phone, such as “What does it mean to have a sudden urge to beat a child that’s not yours?” Today, I have several updates for you in Fallon’s case, including plea deals, sentencing, and more. The National Children's Alliance (or NCA) is a Washington, D.C.-based network of almost 1,000 Children’s Advocacy Centers (or CACs) across the United States. These centers offer crucial services to children affected by abuse, providing them with a safe space to share their stories and access a diverse team of professionals, from health practitioners to law enforcement. CACs have trained nearly 1.6 million people in child abuse prevention, and last year alone, CACs served over 380,000 children. But with this year’s $600,000 cut to the Victims of Crime Act funding, CACs now face dire challenges. In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with Teresa Huizar, CEO of the NCA, to discuss what these cuts mean for CACs and the vulnerable children who rely on them. We explore how these centers operate, the impact of the funding loss, and various child abuse-related topics. (Today would be Cali's 12th birthday, so I'm re-releasing this episode in her honor.) On May 15, 2018, police responded to a self-storage facility in Sacramento, California, where, in one of the storage units, sat a box containing a blue plastic barrel, inside which was a duffel bag. In that bag were the remains of a small child who appeared to have been dead for at least two weeks. Police tracked down the couple who left the box in the storage unit, Tyler and Averyauna Anderson of Reno, Nevada, and arrested them for the murder of Tyler’s five-year-old daughter, Cali. This is the story of a little girl whose stepmother hated her so much that she kept Cali handcuffed in a dog crate in the bathroom and slowly, over the course of several years, starved the little girl to death. It’s also the story of a man who doesn’t deserve the title of “father,” because he did absolutely nothing to protect his own daughter. This is the horrific story of Cali Anderson. When Vayda Vasquez was a month away from turning two, her custodial maternal grandma trusted her overnight with a long-time family friend, Kellie Barthel. The following morning, after several 911 calls from Kellie’s residence in Stanton, Michigan, police responded and found little Vayda unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene. On the evening of May 5, 1993, three eight-year-old boys—Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers—went missing in West Memphis, Arkansas. The next day, in a nearby wooded area, the boys were found brutally murdered, bound, and submerged in a drainage ditch. The horrific nature of the crime shocked the community, and police quickly arrested three local teenagers—Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley—based on a coerced false confession, no solid evidence, and Satanic panic. This is the story of three innocent children whose lives were stolen in an unspeakable act of violence. It’s also the story of three wrongfully convicted teenagers who spent 18 years in prison, one of them on death row, for a crime they didn’t commit—the victims of a flawed justice system and a community in the grip of fear. Jonathan Carey was autistic and nonverbal. Because he needed more care than they could provide in their home, when Jonathan was nine, his parents sent him to a highly recommended residential program at the Anderson School in Staatsburg, New York, where young Jonathan was starved, isolated, and physically abused. Due to the PTSD Jonathan suffered from the abuse, he had difficulties at home, and the Careys had no choice but to find another residential placement for him. In 2005, Jonathan began attending the residential program for adolescents at the well-regarded O.D. Heck Developmental Center in Niskayuna, New York. On February 15, 2007, 13-year-old Jonathan died at the hands of an O.D. In 2003, an East Texas couple adopted three young Russian children. Over the years, there were countless red flags for child abuse, especially against the oldest child, Alexey, who began running away when he was 12. He ended up on the doorstep of the Roosevelt House, an emergency shelter, assessment center, and residential care facility for children removed from abusive situations, usually by CPS. The home’s founder, Diane Black, had no idea that her battle to save Alexey and his sisters, Anastasia and Svetlana, would upend life as she knew it. On December 2, 2015, 23-year-old U.S. Army specialist Jeanie Ditty called 911 and calmly requested an ambulance for her two-year-old daughter, Macy Grace, who she said had thrown up in her sleep and aspirated. As soon as Macy Grace arrived at the hospital, medical staff took one look at the bruises covering her from head to toe and called the Fayetteville Police, reporting probable child abuse. Tragically, Macy died two days later. This is the story of a young mother with a very slippery grasp on the concept of truth who told multiple stories about the events of that morning. It’s also the story of a bright-eyed little girl who brought joy into the lives of everyone who loved her and who, over eight years after her murder, still hasn’t received justice. Three years ago, in episode 69, I told you the story of six-year-old Corey Micciolo, whose mother fought for months to save her son from his abusive father. Despite her pleas to New Jersey’s Division of Child Protection and Permanency and the family court system, Christopher Gregor retained primary custody of Corey. On March 20, 2021, surveillance cameras in the gym at Christopher’s apartment complex captured horrific footage of Christopher forcing Corey to run on a treadmill, causing him to fall repeatedly. Less than two weeks later, Corey died in the emergency room with a tear to his heart caused by blunt force trauma. Christopher Gregor’s trial is currently taking place in Ocean County Court. In episodes 35 and 36, back in late 2020, I told you the story of 9-month-old Jacob Landin, a tiny boy with a big laugh and an even bigger personality. Jacob died in April 1987 from a severe traumatic brain injury. When the injury occurred, he was in the care of his mom’s boyfriend, Steven Chavez, who told several different stories to Brenda Landin, medical professionals, and investigators. Despite being the only suspect, failing a polygraph, and reportedly confessing to police, Steven was never prosecuted for Jacob’s murder, and he went on to abuse and terrorize Jacob’s mom and brother for years afterward. Four years ago, in episodes 16 and 17, I told you the tragic story of 3-year-old Arabella Parker. Because that was so early in my podcasting journey, I’m not satisfied with my coverage of her story, so I’m revisiting it in an all-new, comprehensive re-telling as I’ve never told it before: with the help of her family and others. On October 10, 2019, Arabella reportedly suffered a seizure at her home in Trevorton, Pennsylvania. At the hospital, doctors immediately suspected child abuse based on her multitude of injuries, which included a head injury so severe that they had to remove part of Arabella’s brain. Her mother’s boyfriend, Jahrid Burgess, was arrested almost immediately. After her mother, Samantha Delcamp, gave multiple conflicting statements to police, to reporters, and even on The Steve Wilkos Show, Samantha was also arrested. On the morning of Wednesday, March 18, 2020, police in Bakersfield, California responded to an apartment on a report of an eight-year-old child not breathing. Although Ger’Mya Alexander was rushed to the hospital, she died of her injuries the same day. Her mother’s boyfriend, 37-year-old Clint Mason, who had been caring for Ger’Mya when she was fatally injured, fled on foot and was apprehended the next morning. On February 17, 2020, police in Fort Myers, Florida responded to a horrific single-vehicle accident in which a minivan carrying two women and a three-year-old girl veered off the road, hit several palm trees, and flipped over. The little girl, Serenity Robinson, was not in a car seat and was unrestrained. Her mother, Leslie Joe Zeagler, was found to be impaired by multiple controlled substances and survived with minor injuries. Serenity was not so lucky. Leslie was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Later, Fort Myers police officer Tyler Williams was also charged after prosecutors learned he had pulled Leslie over a month earlier, found illegal drugs in the van, and let her go because he didn’t feel like calling DCF that morning. Even though this officer’s intervention likely would have saved Serenity’s life, a judge dismissed the charges, and the only person prosecuted was her mother. On April 19, 1973, seven-year-old Joan D’Alessandro left her family’s home in Hillsdale, New Jersey to deliver her last two boxes of Girl Scout cookies. She never returned. After a massive search and an intensive investigation, police zeroed in on the family’s neighbor, 27-year-old high school science teacher Joseph McGowan, who soon confessed that he had sexually abused and murdered Joan before dumping her body in Harriman State Park, just over the border in New York State. For decades, Joan’s mother, Rosemarie D’Alessandro, has led a charge to change laws, both state and federal, to better protect victims’ families. She has also created a nonprofit foundation focusing on child safety and programs for underprivileged youth. **This episode was originally released in June of 2021. I am re-releasing it due to the recent arrest of Lisa Jo Vanderlinden, the woman who spent less than a year in jail for Lucas's murder, on charges of abusing another child.** In 2017, Lucas Call and his baby sister were removed from their biological mother’s custody, in part because she had a learning disability and was unjustly deemed an unfit mother. They were placed in the care of a woman who had previously fostered upwards of 40 children. She was also a trained nurse who worked with the county government’s child abuse investigation team. Sixteen months later, in August of 2018, that woman called 911, reporting 2-year-old Lucas was unresponsive. After Lucas’s death was deemed a homicide caused by blunt force trauma, his foster mother, Lisa Jo Vanderlinden, was charged with his murder. After accepting a plea agreement, Lisa, who claimed to accept responsibility for Lucas’s death but never confessed to causing his injuries, received a sentence so shockingly inadequate that many have called for the judge’s removal from his position. As a child, Antonia Deignan believed that her father’s nighttime visits to her bedroom showed the special love he had for her. Still, some part of her knew that what he was doing to her was wrong. She began to create fantasy worlds in her mind to escape. As Tuni grew up, she traded her fantasies for dancing, but her inner turmoil also manifested in self-destructive ways. After she suffered a serious bike accident that forced her to face the demons from her past, Tuni finally began to work through her trauma by writing a hauntingly beautiful memoir about her experiences. *Fallon Fridley should have turned 5 yesterday. I'm re-releasing this episode in her honor.* On December 9, 2020, in Sandy Springs, Georgia, two-year-old Fallon Fridley was spending the night at the home of her babysitter, who was also a good friend of Fallon’s mom, Kristin. The babysitter, Kirstie Flood, called 911 that evening to report little Fallon unresponsive, and Fallon was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Kirstie claimed Fallon had taken a fall earlier that day at the playground, but after incriminating online searches were found on her phone, Kirstie was arrested two days after Fallon’s death. As Kirstie continues to await trial, additional damning information has been discovered by investigators, including video footage of the actual crime. Since I started making this podcast, I’ve told the stories of a number of children that have involved the failures of the family court system. So many names pop into my head when I think about it: Thomas Valva. Nakota Kelly. Averylee Hobbs. James Biel. Corey Micciolo. Since 2008, over 900 American children have died at the hands of a parent or guardian after involvement with the family court system, which punishes parents – especially mothers – for reporting domestic or child abuse. Ohio mom Sara Moore, who lost custody of both of her boys for that exact reason, has had enough. Earlier this year, Sara pledged to walk a total of 936 miles from Columbus to the White House and back, one mile for each of the 936 who lost their lives due to mistakes made by the family court system. In episode 7, I told you the first part of the story of 12-year-old Alex Hurley. I provided updates on Alex’s case throughout the next three years. This past week, the last family member charged in Alex’s death was finally sentenced, so I’m revisiting Alex’s story in an all-new, comprehensive episode like I’ve never told it before. On February 3, 2020, first responders were summoned to a home in West Yellowstone, Montana, where they found 12-year-old Alex Hurley dead on the living room floor, battered and malnourished.
