I was working at a cafe in London. This was stressful and poorly paid. There was a constant line of people coming through the doors wanting their tailored fix of coffee, and there were

never enough staff because employees would quit by simply not turning up.

An hour into most shifts, I would start to develop a headache.

By the time I finished, the pain was making me feel nauseous.

I would throw a coat over my work t-shirt and struggle through the crowded streets

before descending into the underground.

Crammed onto the tube, always standing there was never a seat.

I vowed that I would spend the evening applying for jobs so.

I would never have to spend another day rushing through order after order

and putting up with the complaints if I made the slightest mistake.

Then I would get home to the flat that I shared with five other people and the place would be filthy.

There would be music booming and somebody would have taken my food from the communal fridge.

And there would be a cockroach crawling across the kitchen floor.

By this stage, I didn't have the strength to do anything

but put my headphones in and crawl into bed and fall asleep. The next morning, the whole soul-destroying
