The day my brother tried to force me to down soap to avoid going on a school field trip should have set off alarm bells in my head. It was in a high class trip abroad since our school prioritized its sports department over pretty much everything else.

So they decided the

petting zoo was an ideal place to take 15, 18-year-olds. I wasn't interested in animals or

petting them. I couldn't afford the trip anyway, but somehow my mother had magically come up

with the funds on the day of the trip, pressing a bright green envelope into

my hand. Inside was my permission slip and for a crisp $20 bills. Money that she couldn't

afford to give me. We could barely afford to eat the night before, scrounging on microwave

meals and expired convenience food, but some

of my mother had found some real cash.

I tried to give it back, but Mom was insistent on me joining my classmates and having

a good time.

At a petting zoo?

Spooning stale cereal into my mouth.

I was still frowning at the envelope of cash.

How did she get it?

Mom had lost her job.

She had no family and my father wanted nothing to do with us.
