Today I speak to Juan Cole.

He's the Richard P. Mitchell College of History

at the University of Michigan.

He's the author of several books including

his latest book which is Muhammad Prophet of Peace amid the Clash of Empires and we

talk about that book and it's especially relevant to

what's happening today with Ilana Omar because Juan goes through the ways that the

Quran has been misrepresented but also mistranslated in a way that makes Mohammed look much more

violent and Islam look much more violent than it actually is.

This relates to the tropes and stereotypes of the violent and barbaric Muslim, which we've seen applied to Ilan Omar, which have not been denounced, even as she's accused of anti-Semitic tropes that she has not been engaging in,

people in their condemnation of Omar are perpetuating very Islamophobic tropes.
