Welcome to episode 25, Diplomacy. This sounds riveting, Andrew. We're going to make this as exciting as possible. There

really is a lot of cool stuff that's happening here, but we're going to try and keep the pace

flowing. There's a lot to cover. We're going to try and sum up diplomacy among the six nations

and all the European powers over the course of 50 years into one episode. Does that sound like a

challenge we're up to? It sounds like a challenge, but it sounds like a good one because I want to get this over

with because once we're done with this, we get to start setting up the French and Indian War.

And for our Canadian and European friends, that's the seven years war.

Which is ironic because it took nine years. Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

In 1701, we talked about the great peace of Montreal, correct?

Correct.

The same year, there was also an Albany conference with the British.

So the Iroquois Confederacy has made peace between the French

and had this standing relationship with the English renewed

to brighten their covenant chain.

And this is an interesting piece because they're not claiming that they are going to be

their war buddies and wage war against anybody else. This is a neutral piece. They're working out

two different treaties with these two different countries and stating that we'll be neutral

and we won't help you, but at the same time we won't help the French,

and we'll be good with that. Now help is a general term, but the Iroquois really needed to do this at this point.

War, disease, and displacement caused by all the different influences in the league had caused that their very core to be shaken.
