Summary

Seraphim Hamilton is an Orthodox theologian who is committed to helping others understand the deep and profound ways that the inspired Scriptures bear witness- in Old and New Testaments- of Jesus Christ as the center and culmination of the human story. He received a Master of Arts in Theology and Classics from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Theology from Duke University. He posts regular Scriptural reflections five days a week at his substack and addresses a variety of subjects on his YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/kabane

In this discussion with Seraphim, we talk about the book as a symbol. We discuss the Book of Life in Revelation, Scripture itself, literacy in early Christendom, the use of the codex over the scroll, the sacraments and sacred objects, memory, supplementarity, and more. Enjoy!

And I think perhaps this is one of the reasons that the scriptures emphasize the actual consumption of the book.

0:06.4

Yeah, that's right.

0:07.4

That's the point that he takes the book and he eats it.

0:10.2

So he makes it the inner, it's not just an external reminder, but it ends up being something which then is integrated and then brought into the heart.

0:20.8

I mean, that makes so much

0:22.3

sense because that also explains in some ways what Christ is doing with the entirety of the law,

0:27.7

which is to say, you know, it's like, it's nothing of getting rid of the law, folks.

0:31.9

Or that I want you to eat the law. I want you to put it inside you. And once it's inside you,

0:36.2

then it's generative. But if it just remains outside you, then it could be dead letter and a bunch of rules that don't make any sense.

0:42.6

Yeah, yeah.

but also in the circles around symbolism and with Bible interpretation, Seraphim is Orthodox.

1:21.9

And we're finding more and more that our ways of thinking are kind of coming parallel to each other and joining in different ways.

1:28.1

So we thought we would today explore the role of the Bible, but not just the Bible, but the idea

1:35.0

of the book itself as an object that we see sometimes in icons with Christ holding a book

1:40.0

or the way that we have the book in liturgy, we process it, we kiss it, we do all these things

1:44.7

with the actual physical book.

1:46.6

And what's the relationship between that, the physical object, its meaning, its participation

1:51.4

in our liturgies and in our culture.

1:54.1

And so, Serafim, thanks for joining me.

1:56.6

Well, thanks for having me, Jonathan.

1:58.4

So what's your, first of all, let's start?
