Summary

What if everything around you has been designed to influence your choices? Kori grew up believing emotions were a weakness. As an adult, she used alcohol, food, and other substances to escape her feelings. When she focused on her health, she tried to change her drinking habits but kept falling back into old patterns, no matter how hard she tried. After joining The PATH, she uncovered the hidden thoughts shaping her choices and learned how to rewire them for lasting change. In this episode, Kori joins Annie to explore how advertising, social norms, and easy access to alcohol shape drinking and eating habits and how letting go of control helped her create real change and deeper connections. In this episode, Annie and Kori will discuss: - Growing up in poverty and learning to hide emotions - Using food, alcohol, and substances to cope - Experiencing drinking culture in the military - Feeling emotionally disconnected in relationships - Struggling to change habits while focusing on health - How the brain’s reward system shapes behavior - Why alcohol is more available now than ever - How social norms shape drinking and eating habits - Understanding liminal thoughts and unconscious decisions - Choosing self-compassion over self-judgment - Finding strength in emotional connection - Discovering the power of emotional connection - Taking small, brave steps toward lasting change - And other topics… Connect with Kori: Kori’s Website: https://korimcclurg.com/  Related Episodes: EP 162: Reader Question – Why Does Alcohol Get a Free Pass in Society When It is so Dangerous? https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-162-why-does-alcohol-get-a-free-pass-in-society/  EP 649: Naked Life Story – The Food Code Interview https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-649-naked-life-story-the-food-code-interview/  EP 668: Reader’s Question –  Why Willpower Fails: Cracking the Code to Emotion-Driven Behavior Change  https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-668-readers-question-why-willpower-fails-cracking-the-code-to-emotion-driven-behavior-change/ Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. Hi, this is Annie Grace and welcome to This Naked Mind podcast. I'm here with Corey. Hi, Corey. How are you?

0:20.6

I am well. How are you,

0:21.7

Annie? So good to see you. Glad to have you on. Why don't you take us all the way back to the

0:27.8

beginning in your relationship with alcohol? Where did it all start for you? I think it really

0:33.3

goes all the way back to childhood and I think it was even broader than alcohol, right?

0:40.6

It was, as you well know, alcohol is merely a medication, right?

0:46.3

So, yeah, when I was a kid, we lived in poverty, for sure.

0:53.3

At one point, we lived in a campground, we lived in a bus,

0:58.1

before living in a bus was cool, right? There was no tiny home like movement in those days.

1:03.7

There's something that happens to you there. I think when you grow up in that kind of environment.

1:08.3

And also the thing I just distinctly remember learning as a

1:13.3

kid was that emotion was not okay. You probably a mix of living in poverty and then this idea that

1:22.2

emotion is not okay. My reaction to that was, I have to be the perfect child and just do whatever so that I can one day

1:31.6

grow up and not live in poverty and then also get out of all the grownups way who are

1:38.2

trying to do whatever they can to keep us, you know, alive. That was just how I operated. And it's so funny, like,

1:46.6

I remember being, like, a teenager, you know, probably young to middle teenagehood. And the show,

1:55.6

Star Trek Next Generation came out then. And so there's a character on the show called Data and Data is an Android.

2:04.1

And he does everything like superhuman. He can lift three cars and he can run faster than any

2:11.7

human and he has got this in his brain or neural network is he can recall volumes and volumes of information and you can

2:21.0

process like a computer.

2:23.3

And in the show, his one quote unquote flaw was that he had no emotion.
