The following is an adaptation of the memoir, What Big Girls Do,

A True Crime Biography of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Survival, Forgiveness, and Healing by

Daniel King, told to Katie Kins.

Danielle King lived an itinerant life as a child.

Her parents would abruptly announce, sometimes in the middle of the night, that they were moving.

No explanation was given to Danielle and her sister why they were leaving and in such haste.

It was her father who instigated all the moves. He was paranoid, always in fear that outsiders would learn

things about his family. He definitely didn't want anybody to find out that his daughters were not

enrolled in school. Their family were always on the run as if they were fugitives.

Danielle's father was abusive and generally favored Daniel's sister.

Their father was a salesman who often took to the road to sell his wares.

He took Daniel's sister with him. He would buy her gifts,

which he didn't even do for his wife. After years of moving from town to town, province to province,

state to state, Canada to the United States and back and forth, across the border.

Daniel's family settled at a farm in Athabasca, Alberta.

It was a fixer-upper, but the girl's father put them to work restoring the property.

One night their father introduced them to another kind of duty, one that had no relation to

animal husbandry. One night, while Danielle and her sister, Carol, were watching television, their father walked into the room.

With their mother picking vegetables out back in the garden, he took the opportunity to undress in front of the girls.
