Today's talk comes from Grant Partrick. All right, so let's look at these five verses.

We know kind of from the surrounding context that they're on the way.

Jesus and his disciples are on the way to Jerusalem.

They're entering the last week of Jesus' life, and they went to a certain village.

Now, when you look at these five verses, this is all we have on this account.

So there's a lot of things we don't

know the answer to. There's a lot of questions that I have when I read these five verses that

we kind of have to use context clues to try to figure out. Like, he doesn't tell us how many of them

were going. He doesn't tell us how many people went into Martha's home. It could be the full 72

that he references

earlier in chapter 10, which would maybe give some legitimacy to Martha being kind of bogged

down by serving 72 people in her living room. We don't know. It could be just the 12. It could

have been just Jesus that entered into her house. And it doesn't tell us what village they entered.

Presumably, though, this is the same Mary and Martha that we see in John's gospel, that

Jesus had a great relationship with Mary and Martha and their brother Lazarus, and they

often hosted Jesus in their house, in the village of Bethany.

We know from John's gospel in John 14, verse 11, it tells us that Jesus loves this family.

It literally says in John 14, verse 11.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

So here Jesus is, coming into this town of Bethany, which is two miles east of the temple in Jerusalem,
