Summary

Earlier this year, my daughter got to meet the transgender TV star Laverne Cox. I wrote about it for my blog, and that heart-warming, feel-good post went crazy viral on the internet.  But there's more to the story.  Here it is.

Just over a year ago,

Laverne Cox made the cover of Time magazine.

Cox is one of the stars of the hit TV show,

And she was the first transgender person to ever be featured on the cover of time.

because this was it. This was history, and my child. I showed my daughter the

her that Laverne's dress. I told her that Laverne Cox was on the cover of this really important magazine

because she's smart and talented and a really good actress and everybody

loves her. Oh and by the way she's also transgender. I also told my daughter

My daughter looked confused when I said that.

She said, what rights? No one had ever told her she didn't have rights.

So I launched into a speech that I think included Martin Luther King,

Susan B Anthony, and Gloria Steininem, and something about how her friend

Riley's two mommies couldn't get married until really recently.

She looked shocked by this news about Riley's moms. What I didn't tell her was that as a transgender person

she can still get fired or kicked out of her apartment in most places in the US

just for being herself. That seemed a bit intense for a six-year-old.
