In this podcast, we’re going to talk about the interesting relationship between vitiligo and copper.
What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition where the body is attacking certain cells that make melanin. Without melanin, you don’t have skin pigmentation, which creates white skin spots.
Ultimately vitiligo is a loss of melanocyte function. A melanocyte makes melanin, which gives pigment in the skin. It works through the conversion of L-tyrosine (amino acid) into tyrosinase (enzyme). You need this enzyme to make melanin, but to make the enzyme work, you need copper.
However, if you have too much of this enzyme, you can get hyperpigmentation in the skin, which causes dark spots or aging spots.
When you have too much hydrogen peroxide in the body, it can decrease tyrosinase. If you have enough tyrosinase, you can counter the hydrogen peroxide. But, the main antioxidant that rids hydrogen peroxide uses copper and zinc.
Vitiligo remedies:
1. Use copper cream directly on the skin
2. Take zinc
3. Take vitamin D3

1:21.6 | And to make this enzyme work, you need copper. |
1:24.8 | So the entire structure of this enzyme, |
1:27.9 | which is a protein, requires copper. |
1:31.3 | And many enzymes in the body require minerals as their co-factor helper nutrients. |
