So this tracked 21 children who became ill after drinking the popular beverage. They all suffered from symptoms of something called glycerol intoxication syndrome. Glissol is an additive, a common additive in slushies, among other things. And the symptoms that these children presented with were drowsiness, decreased levels of consciousness, even in some cases loss of consciousness,

electrolyte imbalances, for example, low potassium, which can be medically dangerous, and in some

cases, low blood sugar.

Now, the majority of these cases happened after ingestion within 60 minutes.

These children were able to be supportably treated, and again, it's an important reminder

about a known risk about being mindful of slushy drinks for children.

Sorry, I'm looking at you because I'm like, this is the kind of stuff grown-ups tell you.

Like this is real, but like who shouldn't be drinking slushies then?

So this is real and this is the reminder that grown-ups tell you about.

So for slushies, this additive glycerol, it's not in all slushies.

And glycerol, just to be clear, is not a harmful or toxic substance. It's not considered that.

But at high levels, like many substances, it can be harmful, especially for young kids who have a low weight.

So generally, it's recommended that for kids under four, you want to avoid slushies, not just for the additive of glycerol,

but also for other reasons, the high sugar content in many of these products.
