So I've done a lot of videos on insulin resistance, but I had someone ask me, well, how do

0:25.8

I test insulin resistance?

0:27.4

So this video is about how to test for insulin resistance.

0:30.7

There's a test called HOMA IR, stands for Homostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistence.

0:36.3

And that's a mouthful, so let me just break it down.

0:39.4

Homostatic comes from the word homeostasis, which basically means a condition whereby the

0:44.6

body is adjusting the internal function based on the environmental or outside environment

0:57.1

By temperature, 98.6, blood pressure, 120 or 80, pulse rate, 72, blood sugars, like 82.

1:05.7

Then we have a condition called Insulin Resistence, which is a situation where the body is

1:11.7

protecting itself against the high levels of insulin by basically stopping the absorption

of insulin.

1:19.0

So it takes the receptor that's supposed to absorb insulin and it just starts creating

And there's a whole series of things that happen and symptoms that you can have from this.

1:30.9

But the point is, it follows this homeostatic type principle.

1:35.8

So when you have high HOMA IR, that equals high levels of insulin resistance.
