Summary

Forrest and Dr. Rick focus on one of life's most challenging but essential skills - letting go. Whether you're trying to break free from repetitive thoughts, move on from a relationship, or change an old pattern of behavior, this episode will help you learn how to release what no longer serves you.  They start by exploring why letting go is so difficult, the nature of the brain and how it gets in our way, and how to start opening up to a new way of being. They then discuss different practical approaches to letting go, how to work with the feeling of “giving up,” and staying on your own side when facing resistance.  You can watch this episode on YouTube. Hello and welcome to being well. I'm Forrest Hansen. If you're new to the podcast, thanks for listening today. And if you've listened before, welcome back. This is the time of year where people are often focused on starting something new. A new habit, a new hobby, hey, maybe even a new relationship.

But what's often lost sight of are all of the things that we have to let go of in order to make

0:28.5

space for something new. But it's not so easy as just saying, hey, let go of it. Stop thinking that

0:34.6

thought. Get over that person. You know, let go of that pattern of

0:38.0

behavior that's no longer serving you. As anybody who's tried to do this knows, this can be a

0:43.0

very challenging process. And letting go is a kind of hidden superpower that informs so much of

0:48.5

our lives. So to help us learn how to let go a little bit better. I'm joined by a wonderful guest, as usual,

0:55.0

live and in person. It's Dr. Rick Hansen. Rick is a clinical psychologist. He's a best-selling author,

0:59.7

and he's also, hey, my dad. So, Dad, how are you doing today? I'm really good, and I'm letting go

1:04.5

of feelings of inferiority, being a little shorter than you here, beneath you. I mean, the slightly taller chair.

1:11.6

Maybe I should come down to your level, buddy.

1:13.6

No, no, it's the ascendancy of the young generation.

1:16.6

I'm really liking it.

1:18.6

Freud had something to say about this.

1:20.6

Freud had something to say about a lot of things, about almost everything, about a lot of things, man.

1:24.6

I was so glad you brought it up.

1:26.6

And looking back 50 years,

1:28.7

at least of personal growth work with people and myself, letting go, reducing friction between

1:34.9

us and the world, release. Oh, it's so fundamental. And to name it as a superpower, it's really

1:42.0

really useful, I just love it. Love it. I'm so glad. So glad we're doing this.

1:46.0

Yeah. And to start by maybe figuring out the problem a little bit more before we move on to some

1:50.5

solutions. Yeah. Why is it so hard to let go? Brain don't want to. Really simple. Evolution.
