Summary

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, we talk about the importance of applying critical thinking to documentaries, news, and other media presentations to avoid being manipulated by their biases without having all the facts. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Critical thinking is a valuable skill -- but how often do we put it to practice? Have you ever been influenced to behave in a certain way based on information presented to you in a documentary? We should keep in mind that even the most fair-minded documentary is biased to some degree. Facts are flavored to support a premise -- but can you pick up what the filmmaker's trying to feed you? Try watching a documentary this week and look for the holes in the argument. Try to discern the filmmaker's motivation behind making it. What's the angle? Hey Jordan Harbinger here welcome to mini-sode Monday. I'm happy to be here with you kicking off the

0:04.8

week with something quick and actionable that you can implement right away. Something that will make

0:09.2

you more magnetic and effective hopefully and a better critical thinker today a little something

0:14.1

from yours truly now when I was in law school I was let's just say not the best student in the world

0:20.8

and critical thinking skills there are what save the day. This is how you are taught to think and

0:25.7

look at everything I needed a little extra practice and one of the things that I did was I watched a

0:31.4

lot of documentaries and now not just to watch documentaries and learn about these specific subjects

0:37.6

that was the of course original intent but I would watch documentaries and look for holes and I

0:42.3

recommend you do the same thing what I mean our holes in the argument ask why people have the

0:47.5

incentive that they do to make the documentary why is the filmmaker showing these particular

0:53.1

images why did they choose this particular subject in the first place why are they showing this

0:57.6

person on the screen why are they using these images when they do the voiceover what is their opinion

1:02.8

on the matter and it reminds me of kind of those drills you would have in elementary school when you

1:07.0

would watch something and it's like what did the filmmaker think about this but we don't do that

1:11.3

that much as adults and we just kind of nod and go oh okay this is bad this other thing is good

1:17.0

also ask yourself in the film who are supposed to be the good guys and who are supposed to be the

1:22.6

bad guys think about that because remember that's all a matter of perspective and that perspective

1:28.4

is a choice that that filmmaker decided to take why did they choose this side why did they take that

1:34.9

perspective what did they stand to gain and this is a whole lot of interesting questions here again

1:40.7

why are they showing this person these images what's the filmmakers opinion why did they choose this

1:45.1

subject who are supposed to be the good guys the bad guys why did they choose this side and what

1:48.8

do they stand again that's just the beginning of the questions you should be asking yourself all
